The Well: A Service

  • James Chapel, Union Theological Seminary 90 Claremont Avenue New York, NY 10027 (map)

Nocturnal Medicine invites you to sink down into the subterranean well…

An experimental service in a house of worship, where divinity springs from Earth and prayer is unmoored from dogma.

In a time marked by desecration as a cultural psychology, we carve a pathway, both new and ancient, where the act of sanctification – making sacred – is recognized as an essential tool for surviving and sharing life.

Within the living stage of James Chapel, a tapestry of overlapping performances. Each figure a channeller in their own right; each prayer whispered through movement, material toil, hypnotic sound, ritual; each action revealed by Earth as necessary for the survival of many, not few.

Through the service, we explore a spiritual practice that wants no followers and serves only to open channels into self-governed contact with the divine; that actively evades capture by those hungry to wield our divine connection for their own ends; that helps us find material medicine for this moment; and that sanctifies the life we are living and the place we are in, right now, in a way that helps us meet our own godliness – our ability to act and create.
